Students win trip to Shanghai
Two secondary school students, Adia Wynter of St. Anthony’s and Francesca Southwell of Christ the King, are the winners of a two-week trip to the 12th Shanghai International Youth Friendship Camp to be held in July in Shanghai, China. Both students were entrants in an essay competition which was open to all pupils between the ages of 14 and 18. The competition was initiated by the Antigua and Barbuda China Friendship Association (ACFA) with the assistance of the Chinese Association of Antigua and Barbuda. (CAAB). President of the ACFA, Lady Sandra Williams, commended the two winners on their “detailed research and depiction of Chinese culture and attractions, eloquent and colourful writing style, and accurate grammatical sentence structure”. She added that a booklet of some of the best essays will be printed and made available for reading by any interested persons. The essay topic was “Why I would like to visit China”, and the purpose of the competition was to provide a channel for secondary school students to build a bridge of friendship and exchange beyond language and cultural barriers, and to develop a spirit of cooperation between the youth of Antigua and Barbuda and the People’s Republic of China.
Adia Wynter and Francesca Southwell will be hosted in China by the Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Shanghai Youth Federation.
