Sir Rodney praises charity for its achievements

Governor General H.E. Sir Rodney Williams recently praised the Antigua and Barbuda Renal Society for its execution of  several initiatives which contribute to the improvement of the quality of health care on the island

Sir Rodney gave high commendation for the work being done by the Society in the dialysis unit at the Mount St.John’s Medical Centre . Initiatives undertaken include assistance in the purchase of dialysis machines and other equipment, financial support for the training of staff , and payment for services overseas needed by patients diagnosed with chronic end stage renal failure in cases where such  treatment is not available in Antigua and Barbuda .

The Governor General emphasized that a large percentage of our population is afflicted with noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus, heart disease , cancer and chronic renal disease , and said that the majority of deaths in Antigua and Barbuda result from complications associated with these medical conditions .

Sir Rodney urged the Renal Society to place greater emphasis on health promotion , education , and empowerment of individuals,  families and communities. He lauded  the efforts being made to encourage  early screening and detection of these disorders , as well as appropriate interventions in order to prevent undue complications leading to the requirement for dialysis and kidney transplants .

The Antigua and Barbuda Renal Society is one of the 32 charities under the  Patronage of Their Excellencies Sir Rodney and Lady Williams, and a monetary donation was made by the Halo Foundation on the occasion of the Society’s annual gala dinner and dance held recently at the Sandals Grande . In his speech at the gala  , the Governor General also  congratulated the Society on its twenty years of existence and contributions.
