On Saturday 19th January 2019, the Halo Foundation Generation Y, the youth arm of the Halo Foundation, hosted FUTURE PROOF — an empowerment retreat — on the lawns of Government House. The participants included secondary students from both public and private schools across Antigua. Among the speakers were President of the Senate the Honourable Alincia Williams-Grant, the President of the Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross Michael Joseph, the President of Halo Generation Y Brent Scotland and Dr. Donovan Thomas and Mrs. Faith Thomas from Choose Life International in Jamaica.

According to Brent Scotland, the event was launched to “prepare the young people of Antigua and Barbuda for the future. The year 2017 saw an increase in the number of teenage suicides and as a youth organization, the members of Halo Generation Y felt compelled to provide some measure of help.”

The facilitators of the event, Dr. Donovan and Mrs. Faith Thomas from Choose Life International spoke on various topics, including stress management techniques, character building principles, and confronting anti-suicidal tendencies.

During their motivational speeches, Senator the Hon. Alincia Williams-Grant urged the students not to “let fear consume them, take over their life or cripple their development, but to be bold and be brave when embracing it.” Michael Joseph, President of the Red Cross, also spoke, noting that in order to succeed in life, the young people would need to make sacrifices.  “Anything you want, you will have to work 10 times as hard for, and fail 9 times at achieving. This is the reality of life. ”

Sponsorship was provided by LAVA International, ECAB, Starfish Jolly Beach Resorts, George “Wooden Foot” Browne, Zero Degrees and Marlon Hunte , Paddy and Jack Prendergast, Crab Hole Liquors and Anjo Wholesale.
