The Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross was established as a branch of the British Red Cross on the 20th of October 1941, and gained full autonomy when the country became independent from Britain in November 1981. By an act of Parliament in August 1983 it became a National Society. In November 1992, the Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross was recognized as a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Mission:
To work effectively with the Government in disaster preparedness and response; and in our National Society’s mandate, to help fulfill the unmet health needs of the most vulnerable in our communities.
Awards:
Since the Red Cross has figured four times in the award of the Nobel Peace Prize (1917, 1944, and 1963), as well as in the award to Henri Dunant (1901), and has therefore been made the subject of various presentation speeches and Nobel lectures which give details of its inception, history, and activities, the following brief summary of its origins and present organization is intended as a frame of reference for all four of these awards rather than as the typical history ordinarily included for each award to an organization.
