A wonderful experience

Hi everyone. I am Ashantae Wallace of the Halo Foundation.
For the past few weeks, I was given the opportunity to join the ACE (A Challenge 4 Everyone ) team as a Unit Leader. I was put in charge of mentoring a group (Cygnus ) of young and aspiring athletes, lawyers, scientists and so on. … all who believe that challenges will prevent their dreams.
My duties included supervising literacy sessions, and reading aloud a book written by Matthew Syed entitled “You Are Awesome”. We dove into strategies and solutions for any upcoming challenges they may face. I also supervised the learning of instruments which was a new experience to most of the campers.
I accompanied my group of 20 children (ages 11 and 12 ) to music, art, kickboxing and sports (softball cricket, basketball and football). We visited the Falmouth Harbour Marina to go sailing, learn water safety and knot tying, and to undergo a CPA crash course in fire safety. We even toured the Antigua Port Authority — learning how everything works. I was amazed to see and participate in all these activities, assisting in stimulating these small minds to think big and embrace a growth mindset.
My two weeks of volunteered service were well enjoyed; my mind was open to the different ways in which we could help make even a small change in the lives of our youth. Our mantra at ACE is apt: “How high I aim, How far I reach, How much I see, Depends on me.” This resonates with me and I am proud and grateful to have been involved.
(ACE) Summer Camp, ‘Igniting the Potential’, has truly been an awesome and exceptionally gratifying opportunity. To be able to be a part of such a monumental programme, conceived and executed by H.E. Karen Mae Hill, is truly worthwhile.
